Civic Engagement Day Pilot

Civic Engagement Day

On September 26th, 2024, The Ezekiel Project proudly partnered with Saginaw Public Schools to host Civic Engagement Day, a transformative pilot program designed to empower young leaders and foster a deeper understanding of civic participation. Held at the Delta College Center in downtown Saginaw, this dynamic event brought together 58 students for a day of learning, dialogue, and action.

The Day at a Glance

1. Student-Led School Board Forum
The day began with a powerful student-led school board forum, where students took the lead in asking critical questions about issues impacting their education. This interactive session gave participants the chance to experience civic leadership firsthand while engaging in meaningful discussions with school board members and educators.

2. Post-Lunch Dialogue: The Power of Involvement
Following lunch, the focus shifted to a guided discussion about:

  • The impact of school funding cuts and other pressing educational issues.
  • Why attending school board meetings matters.
  • How students can advocate for change in their schools and communities.

This session highlighted the importance of being informed, getting involved, and using one’s voice to shape the future.

3. Registering the Next Generation of Voters
To wrap up the day, students learned about the importance of voting and how it directly impacts decisions in their schools and neighborhoods. Those eligible were given the opportunity to register to vote, while younger participants could pre-register, ensuring they’re ready to make their voices heard as soon as they’re of age.

Why Civic Engagement Matters

At The Ezekiel Project, we believe that empowering young people to understand and participate in the democratic process is vital for building stronger communities. By hosting events like Civic Engagement Day, we aim to equip the next generation with the tools, knowledge, and confidence they need to be active, informed citizens.

Looking Ahead

This pilot program is just the beginning. We’re committed to expanding Civic Engagement Day and other initiatives that inspire students to take an active role in shaping their schools, communities, and futures.
